ONE motorist was transferred to hospital in an air ambulance following a four-vehicle pile-up near Wigan.
One vehicle smashed into another, triggering a further two cars to become involved in a collision on the M6 southbound between junction 28, in Leyland, and 27, at Standish, at 10.50am on Saturday.
Queues formed all the way to junction 29 as two lanes were closed until 2.30pm.
The driver of a Rover was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with neck injuries. The passenger, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to the same hospital via ambulance.
