WIGAN’s children missed 117,000 days of schooling due to absence in one term.
The Department of Education’s report into absences revealed that in the 2011 Spring term, Wigan’s youngsters missed 188,340 half days in authorised absences and 47,086 in unauthorised absences.
Wigan was 10th in the North West out of 23 local authorities highlighted in the report. Bolton and Manchester had higher rates.
Secondary school pupils accounted for most of the absences, with 64,769 school days missed between January 10 and March 30. Primary school pupils missed 52,944 school days.
