THE local branch of the National Union of Teachers has named Val Pownall from Bedford Hall Methodist Primary School as the recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Contribution to Local Education (OCLE) award.

Her nominators at Bedford Hall Primary School said today that Mrs Pownall had been heavily involved in the school’s Eco work over the last eight years, enabling the school to achieve Four Green Flag Awards.

She has produced regular Eco newsletters for parents and carers and has organised plant sales for the local community.

Val is also the school’s Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship Governor and she has supported the school in achieving the Healthy Schools Award.

Mrs Pownall, pictured right, who lives in Leigh, has helped on many school trips and also works with Year 2 pupils every week to help the children develop their reading skills.

As a committed Christian, Mrs Pownall always promotes Christian values and beliefs and she has developed links between the school and church community.

Michelle Waterworth, the Learning Mentor, said, “She is always there when you need her and she always goes above and beyond.”
