IT was a family affair last night as the children of two serving councillors were elected.
This means that for the first time ever in the history of Wigan Council, father and daughter combinations will serve side by side.
Labour candidate Kelly Ready, daughter of Coun Chris Ready was elected with 1,533 votes into the Orrell ward, knocking Richard Clayton from his seat.
Martyn Smethurst, son of Eunice Smethurst, Abram ward, was also elected for the Labour party into the Abram ward with 1,577 votes.
Kelly, who is just 23, said: “I was only seven when my dad was first elected as councillor so I’ve always been brought up with it and because of my dad’s involvement in local politics it’s something I’ve always been interested in.
“I’m delighted to follow in his footsteps and can’t wait to get out on the ground.”
