A SEX-starved former Wigan teacher who downloaded hundreds of indecent images of children has been jailed for 14 months.
A court heard that when police raided the home of Dewi Wyn Jones they seized his computer finding the disgusting images, many in the two most serious categories.
Jones, 61, gave up teaching after he was convicted and jailed for two and a half years for child sex offences in 1988.
Sentencing him Judge Alan Conrad said that although he had not re-offended in the interim “it is evident your sexual interest in children has remained.” He said the offences involve “real victims” because children are exploited by those who make the images.
Joanne Maxwell, prosecuting, said that when Jones was interviewed by police he accepted “his curiosity over a three-year period” and his “lack of sexual fulfilment led him to view indecent images of children.”
He claimed invitations to access the images would pop up when he was looking at adult porn but Miss Maxwell said there were also links directly accessing the child images. “He now accepts that he has somewhat of an unhealthy curiosity in looking at indecent images of children.” She added that Jones, who used to teach in Wigan, would view the images at his home while his wife and daughter were not in the room. Jones, of Dunlin Avenue, Newton-le-Willows, admitted 12 charges of making indecent images and one of possessing such images.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that a total of 703 images were found in all categories of seriousness including 110 in the two most serious groups.
Tom Watson, defending, said Jones accepted that the problem which led him into trouble in the ’80s has not gone away but he is coming to terms with it. He has largely been a house husband since losing his teaching career and is the primary carer for his father who is in his 90s, he added. The judge imposed a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order restricting his internet use and ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.
