A TREE brought down in high winds has disrupted rail travel through Wigan this afternoon.
It crashed down from an embankment and onto overhead cables on a section of line between Garswood and Bryn at lunchtime today (Tuesday).
Trains that were already on the section had to be diverted before Network Rail engineers could get to the scene and set to work on untangling and cutting up the tree.
In the meanwhile services on the Liverpool to Wigan line were curtailed at St Helens with service provider Northern Rail laying on buses to transport passengers onto destinations beyond the incident point. Likewise coaches also took Wigan passengers to Liverpool Lime Street.
Northern Rail said it could be some while before normal services resumed.
