A FAMILY escaped unharmed after a car they were travelling in burst into flames.
The family of four were travelling along the M6 when the driver noticed a problem with the engine and turned off at junction 25, heading towards Marus Bridge.
A fault in the engine compartment sparked a fire when the Citroen Picasso was in Warrington Road, at noon on Saturday.
Two adults and two children quickly left the car and called the fire service.
Crews used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to extinguigh the flames, which destroyed most of the car.
No one was injured.
A spokesman for Wigan Fire Service said: “The family did the correct thing in leaving the motorway and keeping themselves safe.”
