THE family of a Wigan schoolgirl have spoken of their horror after she was raped by a 17-year-old boy.
The teenager admitted raping the 12-year-old Wigan girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, during a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.
The boy, who is from Aspull but cannot be named, pleaded guilty to a charge of statutory rape and will be sentenced on April 26.
The victim’s grandmother today said the attack has had a huge impact on the youngster’s life.
The girl was initially too traumatised to talk to anyone about the incident, which took place in October, but found the courage to report the rape after an interview with social services.
Now the grandmother says she hopes the young girl can overcome the attack and not allow it to have a long-lasting effect on her life.
She said: “There has been a great deal of upset caused over this. He is much older than the child is and should have known that what he was doing was wrong.
“She’s had to deal with a lot of problems and her behaviour has changed drastically since this happened.
“At first she wouldn’t say anything about it and we had no idea what she’d gone through.
“She was bottling it all up inside and it only came to light through social services. But it’s a relief that she hasn’t had to go through a trial.
“It wouldn’t have been good to make her go through the evidence in court, especially after what she has already been through.
“Her friend would also have had to give evidence in court too which would be stressful for any young person.”
