PLAYERS and fans last night paid an emotional tribute to Steve Gohouri.
A minute’s applause was held before kick-off at Latics’ Sky Sports-televised 3-2 victory over Gillingham.
The 34-year-old was found dead on the shores of the River Rhine in Krefeld, to the north-west of Dusseldorf, on New Year’s Eve. There was no third-party involvement.
He had gone missing three weeks earlier following a Christmas party at his current fourth division German side TSV Steinbach.
Gohouri arrived at Latics in January 2010.
The Ivory Coast international went on to make 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. Of course, one of those goals is fondly remembered by fans – a second-half equaliser against Liverpool in front of The Kop at Anfield.
The game finished 1-1 and contributed to them avoiding relegation from the top-flight.
Earlier this week, Everton manager Roberto Martinez – who brought Gohouri to Wigan – described him as “a bubbly character”.
