Fig gets goal gong
Maynor Figueroa
MAYNOR Figueroa has finally received the appropriate recognition for his wonder goal at Stoke last season by being belatedly awarded the ‘Goal of the Season‘ award.
The Honduran’s 60-yard free-kick at the Britannia was so far clear of the rest that Match of the Day chiefs have only just realised it was never officially acknowledged as the best.
According to Roberto Martinez, however, it was never in doubt.
“It was very well-deserved,” the Wigan boss said. “Every time you see it, it gets better and better.
“The award has been a long time coming but it’s something Maynor will treasure forever.
“Maynor is capable of reaching the ball from that kind of distance, and the technique to make the right contact.
“But to try it, in a proper game, is the key aspect of the goal – and means it will always be one of the best-ever goals in the Premier League.”
Figueroa added: “I hadn’t seen that I had won, but it makes me very happy to win the award.
“It is nice to be valued and to be voted number one.”
