A WIGAN motorist who smashed another vehicle’s rear window in a road rage incident received a £95 fine and a 12 month conditional discharge.

Thomas Harrison of City Road, pleaded guilty at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court to causing the damage to the car belonging to Sean Taylor.

The court heard that the 23-year-old was driving behind Mr Taylor’s car along Pottery Road towards Saddle Junction. Once both cars had stopped, Harrison got out of his Volkswagon Golf and punched the rear window of Mr Taylor’s Vauxhall Corsa, causing it to shatter.

Peter Moran, defending, told the court that Mr Taylor had been weaving in and out of lanes of traffic.

He said: “Mr Harrison was unhappy about that and he got out to talk to the man. He tapped on the back window and it broke. The man apologised for the way he had been driving.”

Mr Moran also explained that his client had offered to pay for the damage at the earliest opportunity.

Presiding Magistrate Fred Disley ordered Harrison to pay £80 plus a £15 victim surcharge. He also took into account that Mr Taylor’s pregnant girlfriend was in the car.

He said: “This was a road rage incident in the presence of a pregnant woman who must have suffered some trauma as a result.”
