THREE fire stations in Wigan borough will open their doors to youngsters in a bid to get them involved in sport over the Halloween and bonfire night period.

Hindley, Atherton and Leigh fire stations will become Sports Zones during the annual Operation Treacle campaign, where children and young adults can try football, climbing, boxing, dance and other sporting activities.

The Treacle campaign is designed to prevent, tackle and protect against anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and reducing incidents and injuries during the Halloween and Bonfire Nightperiod.

Borough Manager Steve Sheridan said: “It’s fantastic that our stations can open their doors to the young community during Treacle to help keep them fit and active.

“It will allow young people to take part in team building and sporting activities and will allow them to engage with our firefighters as role models.

“They will explain that the safest way to have a happy Bonfire Night is to go to an organised event.”

Partner agencies involved in Treacle include Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), Greater Manchester Police, 10 local authorities, Trading Standards, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Health and Safety Executive.

Working in partnership with Wigan Borough Sports Council, leisure and culture provider WLCT and Wigan Council it comes after almost £180,000 of Sport England funding was awarded.
