His girlfriend had put them on his wrists on Friday night but did not take them off.

The man was trapped for some time before a neighbour climbed through a window and used bolt cutters to cut the chain on the handcuffs.

But they could not remove the handcuffs from his wrists, which had started to swell, and called an ambulance.

Paramedics took him to Wigan fire station, on Robin Park Road, Newtown, at 5am today.

Gareth Gray, watch manager at Wigan fire station, said: “She thought he had a key but he didn’t. He had them on for 24 hours and they had got really tight.”

Firefighters used a small angle grinder to remove the handcuffs from the man, who was around 30 years old.

Mr Gray said: “He was fine, just some red marks on his wrists where they had been.”
