THE new Wigan branch of a charity supporting families of stillborn children is holding its first fund-raising event this weekend.

St Cuthbert’s Rugby Club on Montrose Avenue, Norley, will be the venue for the money-spinner in aid of the Sands charity.

Proceeds will go towards a statue the group has commissioned for its garden of remembrance it is establishing at Westwood Cemetery for those who have lost children before, during or soon after birth. The group has identified a particular design of a sleeping baby which will cost around £1,600 to create. It also hopes to install benches and plant flowers for the “quiet area.”

And the fund-raising efforts begin at 7pm on Saturday with a quiz night with a DJ and hotpot supper at St Cuthbert’s.

There will also be an auction and raffle for which the organisers have accumulated a number of prizes including footballing memorabilia from Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Tickets are £5 each. Contact 07547 710119, or e-mail wigansands10@gmail.com for further details on both the quiz and to help the memorial garden scheme. Also visit www.wigansands.moonfruit.com.
