ASDA launched their new community initiative across the borough on Monday.

The warehouse on Whetlea industrial estate welcomed local charities and dignitaries, including Mayor of Wigan Coun Joy Birch, into their depot to launch the scheme.

The company is seeking worthy community activities to support. The depot currently has funding to offer to charities, good causes, school projects or community projects in the local area.

Asda’s Moira Morris is now appealing for people to get in touch with the distribution centre to pitch their cause.

She said: “We will be offering £200 every eight weeks to donate to one of these worthy causes and that isn’t all, we also have two additional £50 donations to offer to two other runner-up nominees.

“If you are a local charity, school or organisation working on a local community project that you would benefit from a donation, then all you need to do is send in your nomination to us.

“We’ve invited a lot of people down today as we have so much to give.”

The depot workers will be asked to vote on the nominations submitted and the one with the most votes will receive the largest donation of £200 and a donation of £50 will also be made to the other two runner-up nominees.
