Former pub site a 'battlefield'

Action is being demanded to clean up a former pub site which has been turned into a dumping ground.

The area on Wigan Road, Bryn, where the Britannia Pub once stood has become a grot spot since it was pulled down three years ago.

Planning permission was granted last September for housing but no work has begun. However, rubbish has been dumped on the site.

Now a local councillor is demanding the council step in and clean it up.

Coun Gary Wilkes said: "It looks like a battlefield and it's been like this for the last three years.

"I have had a lot of complaints from the residents. It's full of tipped building rubble.

"The council has the authority to clean this up and it needs to be done because this site is letting Bryn down. It's been a mess for too long now."

Wigan Council said it was in negotiations with the site developers and that the land would be cleaned when development work started.

The plan is to build 20 apartments on the site with access off Wigan Road.

Manley Developments, which took over the land from another developer, says that work to fence off the land and clean it up is likely to take place in the next few weeks, while building work will start in the next two years.

Neil Manley, from Manley Developments, said: "We couldn't get near the site because British Rail have been doing some work there.

"They've just finished and over the next few weeks we will be fencing it off and cleaning up the land."
