MOTORISTS in Wigan ground to a halt after a main road into the town was closed in both directions.

The emergency services were called to Wigan Lane, outside Wigan Infirmary, at 10.50am, after a four car crash.

It was understood that three vehicles ploughed into a car which had pulled up to park at the side of the road.

The last car in the pile-up - a red Citroen - suffered the main impact, with two women trapped inside.

Fire crews cut the roof off and the driver, thought to be in her 40s, was taken to hospital on a spinal board with neck, back and hip pain.

The passenger, plus another woman who was extricated from a different car were also taken to Wigan Infirmary.

Three other people, a woman and two men, declined hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said that all injuries were minor.

The road was open at 12.20pm.
