A PLUCKY group of friends’ efforts paid off after they managed to raise £2,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The idea for a series of fund-raising events for the charity came from Vicky Rigby, who wanted to do something to mark her 10th year in remission from cancer.

And so with the help of friend Sheilah Baron the pair arranged a baubles, bangles and beads afternoon where Sheilah’s home was opened up to friends who wanted to get their hands on a bargain.

The woman gathered items from their own jewellery collections as well as receiving donations from kind-hearted women across the borough.

That event raised £850 and last month Sheilah held her annual ladies dinner at Wigan Cricket Club for the same cause, which brought the total up to £2,000.

Sheilah said: “We were really pleased to be able to hand the money over to Cancer Research this week.

“Vicky was delighted with the money that we raised as was everybody else.”

Earlier this year Vicky said: “I feel so lucky to still be here today, which is why I want to give something back by holding a charity event.”
