A HUGE fire at a tyre factory sent a massive plume of black smoke billowing into the skies over Wigan.
Emergency services were called to the tyre shredding factory on Moat House Street in Higher Ince at around 12.30pm on Sunday to the blaze which created a smoke cloud visible for miles across the borough.
Fire crews battled for more than an hour to bring the flames under control, with reports also suggesting there were several gas canisters stored on the premises.
Employees at nearby businesses were rushed away from their buildings to safety, while a nearby junior rugby league match was also abandoned.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) shut parts of Manchester Road, Moat House Street and Dobson Park Way and put diversions in place, advising motorists to find alternative routes as long queues developed between Ince and Hindley.
Residents were also advised to keep their doors and windows shut. The North West Ambulance Service attended the scene but no injuries were reported.
