A CALLOUS hit-and-run driver left an eight-year-old for dead in the middle of the road.
Had it not been for the alertness of another motorist, the child might also have been run over and fatally injured by further traffic as she lay there helpless.
As it is, the unnamed youngster was carried to safety, and is now at Wigan Infirmary undergoing treatment for a broken left leg.
Police today appealed to the driver to come forward and also for information about the incident, which happened in Kendal Road, Ince, around 6.45pm on Monday.
The girl was playing with friends when she was hit by a vehicle, which has so far only been described as either a silver-coloured small or medium-sized car, that was travelling up Kendal Road towards Belle Green Lane.
The motorist did not stop, but moments later, a second silver car did stop, the driver got out and lifted the injured girl to the side of the road before calling for help.
This car was not involved in the collision in any way.
PC David Newton said: “We are making inquiries to try to trace the driver of the first car, but we need the public to help us with our investigation.
“If you saw a silver car in the Kendal Road or Belle Green Road areas around the time of the collision, or perhaps even caught a partial registration number, we need to speak to you.
“I do not want to speculate on why the driver did not stop, but it is important we find this driver, not least because the girl’s family deserve to know what happened.
“If you were the driver and you are reading this, then please do the right thing and get in touch with police immediately.”
