AN ARSON probe has been launched after the former Standish Golf Club was destroyed by an early-hours blaze.
Fire crews from Wigan and Chorley were called to the Rectory Lane premises at 4am on Saturday after a passing motorist saw the single-storey building in flames.
Firefighters used four jets to tackle the inferno and were at the scene for more than four hours.
The building, whch has been stood empty for several years after the club went out of business, was completely gutted.
Fire officers have informed Wigan Council’s building control surveyors that the property was deemed to be dangerous and recommended demolition.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but residents have spoken of youths hanging around in the derelict building and fire teams suspect it was arson.
A police spokesman said it was too early to confirm whether the fire was started deliberately, and its officers are still investigating the matter.
The owner of the site Morris Homes was expected to assess the damage over the weekend.
