A MULTI-million pound deal to transform Haigh Hall and Country Park into a four-star hotel and family adventure zone has been announced.
Wigan Council announced a £12m partnership deal with Contessa Hotels to turn the Grade II-listed building into a 30-bed boutique hotel with a spa and gym as well as wedding and conference facilities.
The country park, meanwhile, will gain new play equipment, a high ropes area and an innovative adventure golf course, with the whole project set to bring in around 80 jobs.
The local authority hopes Haigh Woodland Park will provide a £30m boost to the borough’s economy as well as securing the future of the much-loved historic attraction.
Announcing the deal, Wigan Council deputy leader Coun David Molyneux said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to deliver something fit for the 21st century and which allows one of the jewels in the borough’s crown to reach its true potential.”
Work to improve the country park’s infrastructure could begin within weeks. It is hoped the free adventure playground will open next summer and guests will be staying at the hotel by Christmas 2015.
