Hammering helps Cameron to top of league

Wigan Athletic fans might be in despair after Sunday's disastrous 9-1 humiliation but for one soccer-mad schoolboy the result brought only joy.

Eight-year-old Cameron Knowles is currently beating 60,000 other competitors from across the country in the Schools Fantasy League – thanks to the efforts of several Spurs stars.

His Camchester United sit in top spot thanks to canny Cameron's acumen in 'buying' Aaron Lennon and striker Jermain Defore who scored five goals in his side's hammering of Latics.

Cameron attends St Peter's CE primary school in Hindley which entered the competition to improve pupils' numeracy skills.

More than 100 pupils in the school are taking part and there is also a staff team.

And Cameron's results have helped put them in the top 100 primary schools in the country.

Cameron of Park Road, Hindley, said: "It was strange to find out I was number one.

"I just have to make sure the players try their best now so my team stays at the top.

"My dad helped me choose the players and I chose some of my favourites and some that I thought would do well.

"It was hard to add up the numbers sometimes but my dad helped me.

"My mum and dad couldn't believe it when they found out I was number one."

His dad, Jason, said: "He bought a player from Tottenham so I knew he had done well. It's the first time he has entered and he picked some players I would never have chosen.

"We saw he was at the top, I think I was more excited than him. It's a great thing to be a part of because it's something different from computer games."

Ross Prior is deputy head at St Peter's, he said: "We do the competition to improve levels of numeracy but we never expected to have a pupil out of 60,000 players to come out on top. I asked Cameron his secret – but he wouldn't tell me."
