A POPULAR Wigan charity appeal had one of its best months yet after generous Wiganers gave it a Christmas present to remember - £14,000.

Last month the Dr Naqvi Heart Beat Appeal reached its best milestone yet, smashing the £100,000 mark but just a month later its new total stands at £114,556.96.

The appeal was launched in December 2009 to raise enough money to relocate the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) into the Cardiology Department, fund new life-saving equipment and create more beds.

And at the end of this month it is hoped that the new state-of-the-art CCU will be opened to patients, in no small part thanks to the generosity of donations from the public, which are still flooding in.

Carolyn Dereszkiewicz, Matron of Cardiology, said: “Over the past 12 months I have been overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity of the people of Wigan and the surrounding areas.

“The support that we have received has not diminished with time and fund-raising events are still being organised and planed for 2011.

“Staff at WWL have also worked so hard in many departments, other than Cardiology, to support the fund which I shall always be very grateful for.”

The appeal has pulled in an amazing amount of support since it first started and although the new CCU is nearly ready for its grand opening it will continue to raise money for a cardiac catheter laboratory.

Wigan’s Cardiology Department is already considered as a centre of excellence across the country and the new additions will only further enhance its capacity and the services it can offer.

The new department and equipment, including a 3D echo machine, allowing 3D images of the heart to be taken, and a telemetry system, allowing a person’s heart to be viewed from anywhere in the hospital, will lead to quicker diagnoses and treatment, potentially saving lives in the future.

The Heartbeat Appeal aims to raise enough money to:

l Relocate the CCU into the Cardiology Department so that everything is based in one section of the hospital;

l Buy three more beds bringing the total to 11;

l Buy a Cardiac Catheter Lab Machine;

l Buy a new £75,000 3D echo machine.
