Marie Curie fund-raiser Holly Smith launches the charity's Cycle to South Africa challenge

IMPROVE the health of the borough and raise cash for a vital cancer support service.

Marie Curie Cancer Care is giving Wigan folk the chance to fulfil those common New Year’s resolutions, whether your goal is to get fit, lose weight, meet new people or do something adventurous in 2011.

The scheme is urging people to sign up to treks, triathlons and cycle rides as well as swimming, walking and dancing events organised by the charity throughout the year.

It follows the launch of Wigan’s Safe Hands appeal – a joint campaign from Marie Curie and the Evening Post to raise £86,000 for the charity.

This will cover the cost of enough Marie Curie nurses to provide free care for terminally ill patients across the borough for the next 12 months.

Most of us have been touched by cancer at some time, so we need the help of everyone in Wigan to make sure we reach our target.

Community fund-raiser Holly Smith said: “New Year’s resolutions often fall by the wayside before January is over, but Marie Curie Cancer Care has events and challenges throughout the year to help you stick to, and achieve, your aims for 2011.

“Whether you want to improve your fitness, have fun or get outdoors more, there’s something for everyone. So why not take up a challenge, fulfil your ambitions and help raise valuable funds for Marie Curie nurses, who provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes.”

Currently Marie Curie is not raising enough funds to cover its service, which gives cancer sufferers throughout the area the chance to spend their final days at home surrounded by loved ones.

One of the charity’s events this year is the South African Cycle Challenge, which will travel along the stunning Garden Route from September 8 to 18.
