ARTIST impressions have been released of a new housing estate on the former site of former Orica and ICI Roburite explosives works.

Taylor Wimpey Manchester has acquired the land on which to build 15 houses on the Gathurst Lane aspect of the site in Shevington.

Protests by local residents in the past have opposed the building of new homes because of the fear of a build-up of traffic as well as pressure on amenities, including doctors and schools in the area.

In November last year, Taylor Wimpey successfully argued for 98 properties in the Vicarage Lane end of the site – up by 10 homes – because even then the floor space would still be below the maximum size once occupied by blast making buildings deep within the Wigan green belt.

The new batch of homes off Gathurst Lane are to be named Beechwood Villas and will see the development of a luxurious selection of four and five-bedroomed detached homes.

Taylor Wimpey bosses say they believe the homes will appeal to families looking for a “peaceful, woodland setting, close to the Leeds Liverpool canal.”

Anthony Mansfield, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Manchester, said: “We’re very much looking forward to building in Shevington and we believe local homebuyers will appreciate the executive style homes we will be building.

“This is a great area to live in with many enticing eateries in the near vicinity as well as schools and St John Rigby College.

“The Leeds Liverpool canal is a short walk away – and is ideal for scenic walks and bike rides.

“Beechwood Villas enjoys a quiet location but is only around 15 minutes from Wigan town centre and five minutes from the M6 motorway.”

Despite the recession and its effect on the building industry, showhomes at the development are expected to open in the spring.
