FIRE chiefs are investigating the cause of a blaze at an unoccupied terrace house in Wigan.
A passerby saw flames coming from the window of the front bedroom in Sydney Street, Platt Bridge, at 4.50am on Sunday, and forced open the door to check if anyone was inside.
Firefighters from Wigan and Hindley, using breathing apparatus, attended and used hose reels to put out the fire.
No-one was inside the property, which was privately rented.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it started in the front bedroom.
Crew commander Simon Connor, of Wigan Fire Service, said: “A passerby saw flames licking up against the window and he pushed the door in to see if anybody was in - luckily there was not.”
“We entered using breathing apparatus.
“The smoke was very thick, which made it difficult for us to find the source of the fire.
“We put it out, confining the damage to upstairs. The fire destroyed the bedroom floor, and the cot and bed in the room.
“It had not spread to anywhere else and did not affected the adjoining houses.
”We are still trying to trace the owner - we believe it was rented accommodation.”
