It was a standout month for Wigan’s food establishments, with an impressive 72 per cent of the venues inspected in March being rated “Good” or “Very Good.”

Out of the 59 takeaways, restaurants, schools, pubs and cafes inspected last month across the borough, 36 achieved the top two scores of Five and Four.

There were 27 eateries awarded a “Very Good” score of Five, with nine awarded a “Good” score of Four.

The figures come as a boost for the borough after it was revealed in February that Wigan’s food establishments have been getting the worst ratings in the North West.

A massive 38 per cent were then rated three (generally satifactory) or below, whereas in Bury, the figure was only nine per cent.

In the latest round of inspections Kilhey Court Hotel in Standish figures among the four-star inspections, in a turnaround from its previous score of one, which it was given as recently as November.

A combined total of 12 venues made up the middle ground of scores of three and two - with eight receiving “generally satisfactory” three scores, and four getting “improvement necessary” verdicts with their ratings of two.

However, the number of places requiring “major improvement” doubled from last month.

Two venues were scored just one (major improvement necessary), up from a single establishment in February.

Venues scoring the second-lowest rating included KNS Food & Wine on Yew Tree Avenue, Atherton, and Costcutter on Manchester Road, Astley, a stone’s throw away from Astley & Tyldesley Luncheon Club, which achieved a Five star rating in the same round of inspections.

For the fourth consecutive month, no inspections resulted in a Zero star rating.

Businesses that serve food are rated on a scale of zero to five on how hygienically it is handled; how it is prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored, the condition of the structure of the buildings; the cleanliness, lay-out, lighting, ventilation and other facilities as well as how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.

The information provided on businesses is held on behalf of local authorities participating in the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in England, Northern Ireland and Wales or the Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland.

The inspections continue throughout the year, with rating designed to provide reassurance to customers.

Establishments are also marked on food-handling practices and procedures and temperature control, as well as its structural compliance, such as cleanliness, layout, condition of structure, lighting, ventilation and facilities.

Businesses are also marked on confidence in management, which is graded on the performance of those in charge and issues such as how well guidelines are understood by the workforce as well as things such as the track record of the company and complaint history.

The latest ratings were correct on the Food Standards Agency website as of April.
