A TWENTY-SEVEN stone man who could not walk more than a few yards and stopped breathing when he slept, has cheated death thanks to a Wigan weight loss centre.
Taxi driver Mike Jay, 50, has lost an amazing eight stone in a year and changed his life - and he’s not finished yet.
Since he first attended the Wigan Wellness Centre on Ormskirk Road, Pemberton, Mike has steadily improved his lifestyle and is already down to 19 stone.
But he is planning to continue the good work by losing even more - while spreading the word about how to do it to others.
Mike was a fit and healthy sportsman until he suffered a serious back injury in his mid 30s when he started to put weight on.
Just over a year ago, Mike could only walk a few yards and suffered from high cholesterol and high blood pressure as well as chest pains and sleep apnoea - which stopped him breathing during sleep.
He had to be given a ventilator and when assessed was found to have stopped breathing for up to two minutes at a time when he slept, due to the size of his neck.
Now, however, Mike is fully active and takes regular walks with his dogs and does not suffer from any of the previous symptoms which were beginning to make his life more difficult.
He no longer needs the ventilator, is not having chest pains, is not at risk of type two diabetes and has lowered his cholesterol.
Mike said his problems started when he stopped regular exercise.
He said: “I used to play rugby and football and even competed in a biathlon, but after the injury I kept up the social side of it without the exercise.
“Before I knew it I was piling on the weight. I have tried to lose it over the years but nothing worked for me until I saw an advert for the Wigan Wellness Centre.
“I went down for a consultation and I’ve never looked back really.”
Mike has put his weight loss down to Herbalife supplements which he is using to replace meals. He has ditched his 56 inch waist trousers and is on the road to losing even more weight.
Mike, who lives with his wife Pat and children, Jonathan, 20, and Siobhan, 19, said: “The herbal life products really worked for me. They may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I think they make the difference.
“Because I am still losing weight I have two herbalife shakes a day and a main meal.
“I feel so much better and to be without the associated problems of being so overweight I really feel I have a new lease of life.”
Mike is now helping the Wigan Wellness Centre by bringing his story to others and is now appearing at clinics every Thursday to help others who were in a position like his.
