A burglar stole two purses and a quantity of cash from an 80-year-old woman.

Merseyside Police are appealing for information after an unknown man entered a house on Shaw Street in Haydock at just before 9.25pm yesterday, Saturday. When confronted by the occupier, a woman in her 80s, he asked for her purse before making a search of the property.

The woman dialled 999 but the offender left the scene before officers arrived. Two purses and a small quantity of cash were taken.

House to house enquiries are ongoing in the area and CCTV and forensic opportunities explored.

Detective Inspector Paul Grounds said: "This was an upsetting experience for the lady. She wasn’t injured but was left badly shaken by her ordeal.

"Thankfully incidents like this are rare but I want to reassure the community that we will do everything we can to find the person responsible.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Shaw Street or may have seen someone acting suspiciously in the area either before or after this incident to contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 6811 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
