A SHOPKEEPER told of his anger today after being robbed of his takings by two raiders wielding a screwdriver and knife.

Girish Sheth, who has confronted robbers in his Bottle and Basket off-licence before, said he would have liked to have retaliated but feared that his assistant might be injured.

Two hooded men burst into the store in Park Road, Gidlow, at just after 5pm on Sunday. Mr Sheth, 40, said: “One shoved a very long screwdriver into my face and demanded all the cash and cigarettes. He also took my mobile and they were all shoved in a black and gold JD Sports drawstring bag.

“They were very aggressive, shouting and screaming and it was all over in three minutes. They then legged it towards Woodhouse Lane.

“I am more annoyed than anything. It was the whole day’s takings they took. I come in at 6am and work until God know’s what time and then these idiots just take everything. You feel like you want to do something but they might have harmed me or my member of staff.

Both robbers were white, one in his late 20s or early 30s of stocky build, with a round face and short hair and wearing tracksuit bottoms, grey Adidas trainers with white stripes. The other also has a round face with dark hair and stubble and wore a grey hoody, blue or black kagool top, and tracksuit bottoms with stripes down the side.

DC Debbie Pennington of Wigan CID said: “To threaten a decent law-abiding shopkeeper with a screwdriver and a knife marks these men out as desperate criminals.

“In order to give this hard-working man some peace of mind, we need to catch these robbers so I would appeal to anyone who can help us put them in prison to call us.”

Police are also investigating another, unconnected off-licence knife raid in Ashton later that same evening.

Two women aged 23 and 27, were working at the shop on Old Road, at 9.45pm when a man walked in, held the knife to the throat of one of the women and demanded cash. They opened the till and the robber snatched money and ran off. Neither victim was injured.

The robber was whit, in his late teens, 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build, wearing a blue all-in-one suit with a black hooded top underneath with the hood up and gloves.

Anyone with details on either raid should call Wigan CID on 0161 856 7251 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
