He bought a packet of mints before producing a 12inch knife and demanded cash.

The woman at the till refused his demands after which the man said that he was only joking and left. He got into dark red or maroon hatchback car and drove towards Haigh Road on the wrong side of the road. He then turned around and drove along Bolton Road in the direction of Bolton.

Police have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the attempted robbery.

PC John Catterall said: “Whatever this man’s intention he brandished a knife at a lone cashier and while she was very brave she was left extremely upset by the incident. If anyone remembers seeing a man leaving the area in the car described or if they recognise the man in the image I would ask they contact police as soon as possible.”
