MOTORISTS will face around two weeks of delays when one lane of a road is shut for gas works.

The National Grid has announced one lane of Chaddock Lane in Astley will be closed while engineers replace a 230m section of gas main near the Astley Industrial Estate.

The road will be shut between the junction with the East Lancashire Road and Chaddock Lane, with the closure preventing traffic entering Chaddock Lane from the A580.

The company said it had tried to avoid the closure, which will start on Wednesday October 14 at the earliest, but it was impossible to finish the project without it.

Stephen Murray, head of Contract West, said: “We are sorry for any issues this lane closure will cause. We have tried our best to avoid it but we do need the closure to allow our engineers to work safely to complete this essential work.

“We will be working seven days a week to get the job done as quickly as possible as we are well aware of the frustration local residents have already suffered through the work on the guided bus lane.

“We now need to do the work to make sure that the people of Leigh can continue to count on a reliable gas supply. We’re replacing a section of old metal main with a modern type of plastic pipe which will last at least 80 years once it is in the ground.

“We hope that people will continue to be patient with us. We hope that people will understand that a few weeks of work will allow us to guarantee them a safe and reliable gas supply for many decades to come.”
