Wigan Athletic have paid tribute to training officer Dave Johnson, who passed away over the weekend.
The 67-year-old had worked for the club for more than 40 years and was a well-known and popular face who was often seen around the tunnel area on matchdays.
Latics have today spoken of everyone’s shock and sadness at the news, passing their condolences on to Mr Johnson’s family and friends.
During his lengthy career with the club, he fulfilled a number of roles, including safety officer at both Springfield Park and the DW Stadium.
A club spokesman confirmed that he had suffered from bad health in recent years but appeared to be on the road to recovery.
Latics boss Gary Caldwell said: “Dave was one of those guys who was always around, always smiling and who just got on with his job quietly and efficiently.
“It was a shock to us all to hear the news this morning of his passing away. It’s a really sad day for the club and on behalf of everyone at Wigan Athletic, we pass our condolences to his friends and family.”
