Badgers not solely to blame for disease

The proposal by the Chief Medical Officer to cull up to 80% of badgers to prevent Bovine T.B. could eventually result in the animal moving towards extinction.

The fears of farmers, fuelled by the recent foot and mouth and blue tongue outbreaks, is understandable, but to blame badgers for a disease that is also transmitted by cattle to cattle and to threaten them with near-extermination is scandalous.

We have had this problem for many years but no vaccine has been developed.

The Government must take some responsibility for the present state of affairs.

Creature comforts key to safety

I have been reading Wigan Council's Local Development Plan.

Under the heading: "What are the benefits of protecting species?" it states that: "Communities can work together towards wildlife projects helping to build stronger and safer neighbourhoods that people are happy to live in."

Personally I am not well up on "wildlife projects" but I would be interested to know what kind of "wildlife project" would build a safer neighbourhood.

Perhaps WMBC want us to introduce a pride of lions to patrol certain target areas.

A few silverback gorillas on our local parks might sort out the underage drinkers and I am fully in support of re-introducing the school leopard.

On the strength of this community opportunity I have written to Martin Kimber, (Drector Environmental Services) requesting a grant to purchase a giraffe in order to aid a local window-cleaning business.

Be patient, McLaren, Hamilton is a winner

Being a good loser is part of the English sporting psyche, so it would seem from the gracious manner in which the England rugby team and racing driver Lewis Hamilton accepted their fate at the weekend.

So, in the case of the latter, it would surely be best if McLaren forgot about appealing against other teams on technicalities. Hamilton will have his world title in the fullness of time.
