Give birds a break

Many turkeys are kept, from days after birth, in windowless sheds – thousands packed together. These animals never see the light of day or smell fresh air but are deprived of everything that makes life tolerable.

Animal Aid has free delicious Christmas recipes for anyone sick of animal suffering and wishing to have a merry, healthy and compassionate Christmas.

Councillors must look after their own wards

I read the story "Councillor denies point scoring" in Tuesday's Wigan Evening Post and I found that once again questions are being asked about Coun Peter Franzen.

I attended that meeting with 15 other residents. It looks like Labour is saying that the residents of Golborne want him out.

I was amazed at the cheek of his statement: "These Golborne councillors should have come along and spoke up for the people as they were elected to do."

Because, Coun Franzen, that is not the case in Hindley Green.

I think the Community Action councillors should look at themselves before calling others.

Sudan has shown its true colours

Like many people in this country, I was outraged at the jailing of teacher Gillian Gibbons in Sudan for allegedly insulting Islam. It appears she escaped a more serious charge of "inciting hatred".

What an appalling situation exists in that country. I would like to see our Government immediately cease giving any financial aid to the Sudanese people.

When they come with the begging bowl after the next disaster seeking aid and financial support - it seems to happen every year - I will be keeping both hands in my pockets and remembering the old saying "Never bite the hand that feeds you".

Stand up for better pensions

At the EU summit in Laeken in 2001, there was a ratified proposal, including by our Government, that all member states should endeavour to attain a level of 40% of their median wages as their basic state pension by 2007, and thereafter work towards 60%.

But in the British Government's recent budget, the state pension is set to increase next April by a mere 3 a week, bringing the state pension to 90.70, and still in line with inflation, not national average earnings. This Government is still discriminating against our elderly people via means testing, and by not relinking state pensions to average earnings.

Link-Age/Countrywide, based in Devon and Surrey, campaigns for higher state pensions linked to national average wages and wants them brought in line with the rest of Europe.

Our campaign has been running seven years, so if you are elderly, or even not so elderly, stop being apathetic, and please give me a ring after 7pm any evening on 01803 857020, and have a pen and paper ready.

The call will take no longer than five minutes.

It is high time we British took our lead from the French, and started to stand and be counted. We under pensionable age owe our elderly people that much.
