Readers' letters - May 19

Nobody does it better! The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations on television on Sunday evening were done with pageantry, parades, scenes from history, mounted cavalry, heart-stirring music and memory-evoking scenes. All these things and more brought to us in our homes – magical. The ‘top secret drum corps’ from Switzerland – well, I couldn’t take my eyes off of them.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and to those who worked behind the scenes.

Highlighting newspapers

Local newspapers are taken for granted by many readers – but they should be revered, particularly as sadly many are under threat and many others have gone.

This is Local Newspaper Week and it is important to highlight the fantastic role that these publications play in community life.

With local authorities using a cabinet system, the so-called transparency they preach can be anything but.

However, determined journalists always seek after the truth on behalf of the communities they serve and that should never be forgotten.

Some tips for healthy living

We hear about healthy living every day but what does it consist of? There are two areas, these are healthy living and exercise.

In our diet, we should be eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholemeal bread, pasta and nuts. We should eat less junk food and fewer sugary drinks, instead we should drink plenty of water every day.

We should exercise and this should be fast walking for about one hour a day or gardening, swimming, dancing or any sort of physical activity. Do it for an hour every day.

Showcase of comedy talent

We were very saddened by the death of Victoria Wood.

A talented lady taken far too soon!

Our memories of her exceptional talent were rekindled by a TV programme reminding us of her talent and humour .

Few entertainers wrote everything that they spoke, but Ms Wood did!

Many great comedians relied upon writers, but not she.

We really should afford her the recognition that she so richly deserves.

May you rest peacefully Victoria and know that your talent will be making us laugh for many many years !

When it’s gone, it’s gone

The impact of fracking will change lives forever, particularly in areas reliant on tourism and farming. Fracking is a short-term solution which will leave behind leaking wells and yet another nasty legacy for future generations to find “novel solutions”. We are not able to make more countryside. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
