TODAY marks 100 days until the Wigan Youth Zone opens its doors.

The turnstiles will roll for the first time on June 8, with membership costing just £5 for the year with each session priced at only 50p.

The facilities inside are state-of-the art. With every interest and hobby pretty much catered for, Wigan Youth Zone is very much seen as the hub which will help thousands of young people develop both academically and in sports too.

Outside are 3G sports pitches while inside are top quality gyms – with Olympic quality equipment, as well as a sports hall and combat sports room.

Of course though, the major attraction to Wigan Youth Zone is those behind it aiming to ensure that there is something of interest there for every young person in the borough.

Whether it be music, career advice or simply a place to relax, it’s hoped that the children from within Wigan borough will flock down after school.

Latics and Warriors have been big backers of the project.

Wigan Athletic players donated £1m from their bonus last year to go towards the Youth Zone, while Warriors captain Sean O’Loughlin selected it to be one of the beneficiaries from his testimonial.

O’Loughlin joined his coach Shaun Wane, Latics manager Roberto Martinez and captain Gary Caldwell at the Parsons Walk site this week to officially start the countdown.

They joined development manager Simon Baker and business Martin Ainscough, who – alongside cousin Bill Ainscough and Dave Whelan – came up with the idea for the Wigan Youth Zone.

Mr Baker said: “We’re confident come June 8, we’ll have everything in place; staff, volunteers and the building to open the Youth Zone seven nights a week.

“It’s all taking shape and starting to come together.

“The quality of everything is top standard, from the 3G pitches to everything inside such as the climbing wall, studios – absolutely everything is top spec, which is what young people deserve.

“So, it’s important that the whole town and the whole community gets behind it.”

Keep your eye out for the latest updates to the Youth Zone in the Evening Post, as we count down the days.
