A FORMER Wigan businessman accused of killing his high-society girlfriend has vowed to clear his name after being released on bail from a Paris prison.

Millionaire Ian Griffin, who owned several tanning salons in the borough, has been on remand in jail without a trial since being extradited to France in 2011.

The battered and bruised body of 36-year-old Kinga Legg was found in the bath of a £1,000-a-night suite in the French capital’s exclusive Hotel Le Bristol – where footballer David Beckham is currently in residence – in 2009.

Mr Griffin, who was described as living a “champagne lifestyle” despite being declared bankrupt in 2006, sparked an international manhunt and was found living rough by detectives at Dingle Bank Quarry in Cheshire a week after his girlfriend’s body was found.

The 42-year-old, who has been fitted with an electronic tag, was released on bail by French authorities last week with a trial date expected to be set this year or early 2014. He is not allowed to leave the country.

His solicitor, Francis Triboulet, said: “He looks forward to his trial date because it’s going to be the time for him to tell everything he has to tell.

“There are so many wrong things that have been said and it’s going to be time for the truth.”
