Ale festival has a global flavour

REAL ale enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice over the next few weeks as one of Britain’s biggest pub chains brings its annual celebration of all things cask to Wigan.

The three JD Wetherspoon pubs in the borough will be allowing drinkers to sample an array of beers from across the world during the 19-day festival, which begins today.

In total there will be up to 50 real ales for drinkers to choose from, with ten from overseas, the largest selection of beers from outside the British Isles to be featured so far in the annual Wetherspoon’s festival.

Festival-goers will be able to sample the festival beers at three locations across the borough, with the Moon Under Water in the town centre, The Brocket Arms on Mesnes Road and The Thomas Gerard in Ashton all taking part.

The UK line-up of ales will include speciality beers made from ingredients including heather, grapefruit and elderberries and a range of exclusive brews which will only be offered at the participating inns.

The ales on offer will include Moonraker by J.W. Lees, Thwaites’ Crafty Devil, Howling Wolf from the Banks’s brewery and the War Horse ale made by White Horse.

The overseas beers will include brews from several countries not often associated with the world of real ale, including Japan, Lithuania and Italy, alongside offerings from the vibrant US craft ale scene and established brewing nations such as Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Brocket Arms manager Julie Curless said: “The festival will give people the opportunity to enjoy a superb selection of UK and international beers.

“Many of the beers on offer have not been available in the pub before and I am looking forward to serving them.”

All the festival beers are priced at £1.99 a pint, and drinkers can also sample three ales in a glass holding one-third of a pint for the price of a pint. The festival runs from today until November 11.
