All White on the night

Thousands of Wiganers braved the wind to watch the town's Christmas lights being switched on by X Factor star Laura White.

Laura performed her new single, You Should Have Known, in front of the jubilant crowd gathered at Standishgate before turning on the lights.

Wigan Warriors stars Paul Prescott and George Carmont also made an appearance, as did pop-rockers Boomin, singer Scott Chapman, Big

Brother contestant Luke Marsden and Father Christmas.

Among those who gathered to watch the lights being switched on were Michelle Kearsley and her daughter Holly, from Hindley.

Michelle said: "This year's switch on has been fantastic and topped last year's.

"Laura White is fantastic and everybody loves her."

Becky, 16, said: "It's great to see that so many people have turned up to see the Christmas lights being switched on.

"Everybody looked to be having a fantastic time."

Wendy Foster, from Worsley Hall, added: "Although it was very cold everyone looked to be having a brilliant time.

"It's great to see so many families with their little children enjoying themselves."

It is believed that up to 5,000 Wiganers showed up to watch the lights being switched on last night.

Mike Matthews, Wigan Town Centre manager, said: "We have had a fantastic turn out and everyone was delighted with the performances from all of the acts.

"We couldn't have asked for more from the crowd who came to see the launch of the festive activities."

John Sanson, Centre Manager for The Grand Arcade, added: "It was an amazing evening with people from across the borough turning up."
