Armed siege man in court

A Wigan man who sparked a 36-hour armed police siege after threatening a friend with a gun has been sent to a mental hospital indefinitely.

Craig Bailey, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, produced the weapon while inside his own Hindley home, terrifying the other man.

Bailey had barricaded the house and it was only after a protracted stand-off that armed police got in and arrested him after subduing him using CS gas and a taser, prosecutor Ian Harris told Liverpool Crown Court.

Recorder Richard Pratt, QC made a hospital order and ruled that it should be without limit of time because he poses a risk to the public.

He said: "I think it necessary for the protection of the public from serious harm to make a restriction order.

"Against a background of disengagement with services there is a high risk of relapse. He suffers from auditory hallucinations and when accompanied by a firearm that carries a very grave risk to the public.

"The wish of all is that he recover and be back in the community as soon as possible. But my duty goes beyond simply doing what he or his family think best, I have a duty to see that the public get adequate protection."
