Arsonists go on a wild fire spree

editorial image

YOBS wreacked havoc in Wigan at the weekend, torching wheelie bins and signs in a series of arson attacks.

Firefighters from Wigan were called to several fires in the Springfield area around 1am on Sunday, as For Sale signs and plastic bins were deliberately set alight.

No-one was injured in any of the blazes, which were extinguished with hose reels.

Watch manager Mike Callan of Wigan Fire Service, said: “We attended four fires in the space of an hour.

“Arsonists were just lighting For Sale signs and any old rubbish they could find on their way home.

“It is a waste of resources, as appliances could be needed for more serious incidents, when instead they are tied up with unwanted, malicious fires.”

If anyone sees someone setting deliberate fires, call Crimestoppers, an independent charity, on 0800 555 111.
