Balls swiped from Latics’ training ground

AN INQUIRY has been launched after dozens footballs were snatched from Wigan Athletic’s training ground.

Four sacks of top-grade Nike balls had been placed at the centre of the pitch at Christopher Park, Standish Lower Ground, ready for the start of a session.

Roberto Martinez was forced to send his team for a run while staff searched desperately for replacements, in what was far from ideal preparation for the Latics’ trip to Goodison Park to face Everton.

It is thought the thieves got into the training complex through an unlocked side gate on Thursday.

Paul Farrington, who runs the unofficial supporters’ website wiganer.net, said: “It’s just disappointing that the local community would do such a thing to its club, when we’ve scrimped and saved ”

The club was unavailable for comment.

Having watched the performance on Saturday I believe that the local community will make better use of the footballs as Martinez doesnt intend to play much football thia season.
