Battle to save wildlife
Wigan wildlife experts are battling to save one of Britain's most endangered birds.
The number of willow tits – unique to this island – has plummeted by a massive 80 per cent in a handful of years.
Loss of habitat is one of the major causes for this alarming decline, but Wigan Flashes have proved one of the sub-species's few remaining strongholds.
And efforts are now under way to improve this local environment further.
Lancashire Wildlife Trust, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Wigan Council experts have teamed up to carry out work at sites throughout the Greenheart Regional Park, of which Wigan is a part.
Willow tits are happiest in mature, damp, woodland that has developed on wetland sites such as Wigan Flashes Local Nature Reserve and Three Sisters recreation area.
Climate change and the fact that suitable habitats are now long distances apart are thought to be further important factors in the decline.
