Betting shop boss stole £40,000
AN ASSISTANT betting shop manager stole £40,000 from his bosses - to fund his gambling addiction.
Marc Maiden used his own unique pin number to access the cash during his four month spree and was inevitably identified as the culprit, a court heard.
When he was quizzed by the police 30-year-old Maiden readily admitted what he had done. He was found to have 860 cash that he had stolen that day.
Maiden, of Moss Lane, Platt Bridge, Wigan, pleaded guilty to theft and was this week jailed for 18 months.
Natalia Cornwall, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court that Maiden was assistant manager at the Ladbroke's shop in Pole Road, Standish.
By December last year discrepancies were investigated and it was found that Maiden had been using his unique pin number to issue refunds for purported mistakes.
By the time it came to light the amount stolen amounted to 40,000 and he admitted that he was a gambling addict who had been taking the money and spending it another nearby bookies.
John Dixon, defending, said that Maiden, who has no previous convictions, was a hard working man who had been employed by the firm for three or four years.
The thefts had started with small amounts but these escalated. "It was like having an alcoholic working behind a bar in a pub. It was always going to end in disaster.
"He had always had a healthy interest in gambling but it rapidly became an unhealthy addiction."
Mr Dixon added that Maiden had obviously lost his job on account of the crime and his wife is also due to give birth to their first child next month, he added.
