Big Brother star to switch Xmas lights on

Wigan's hottest new celebrity Luke Marsden will be lighting up the town at this year's Christmas switch on.

The Big Brother contestant will be switching on the Christmas lights in Market Place, along with Wigan's Got Talent winner Scott Chapman and St Helens band The Cut.

Local school choirs in the Choir for Christmas competition will also be performing and entertaining the crowds.

The live entertainment, organised by Wigan Town Centre management, The Galleries and Grand Arcade and Rock FM, will start at 5.30pm until 7.30pm on Thursday, November 20 in Market Place.

Luke, 21, from Whelley, said: "It's a great honour to be asked to turn your Christmas lights on by your home town and I'm thrilled to be doing it, can't wait."

Stars from Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors will also take part in the switch-on and will be available after the event, from 7.30pm until 8.30pm, in both The Galleries and Grand Arcade for autographs and pictures.

Organisers say there may also be another star celebrity to help with the switch-on, but they are keeping the identity of this celebrity under wraps.

On Sunday, November 23, Wigan town centre will host a family Christmas event, from 11.30am, featuring Santa and his reindeer parade.

The parade starts at 1pm from Mesnes Park and will arrive at Market Place at 1.30pm. A whole day of family entertainment is planned.

Mike Matthews, Wigan town centre manager, said: "This Christmas, Wigan Town Centre, The Galleries and Grand Arcade have organised a wonderful family entertainment programme.

"We are delighted that Luke will be joining in with the festive events in his home town this year."
