Bomb threat chaos

Police launched a major evacuation programme after finding four suspicious packages.

Roads were closed and homes evacuated as bomb experts dealt with the packages in Atherton.

The drama unfolded at 9.45am on Sunday when police were called to Lidl supermarket in Tyldesley Road.

Officers discovered a six-inch suspect package behind the store.

At 2.50pm, a suspect package was found on a fence on West Bank Street.

A number of homes were evacuated while the device was made safe.

Then at 9pm, a third suspicious package was spotted on the Focus car park in West Bank Street.

At 10am yesterday, a fourth package was found near to the junction of West Bank Street and Tyldesley Road.
