Boost for online tv licences
MORE people in Wigan are paying for their TV Licence online than ever before, new figures reveal.
A total of 6,738 people in the Wigan postcode area bought their licence via the internet in the financial year 2009 to 2010: a 17 per cent increase on the previous 12 months.
The increase reflects a nationwide trend, with more than two million people buying their TV Licence online in 2009/10, an overall increase of 15 per cent on 2008/09.
The rise also follows a TV Licensing campaign to encourage people to consider using the TV Licensing website to pay or renew their licence or amend their details, stressing that it’s all possible at the push of a few buttons.
The news coincides with a recent Ofcom report, which showed 73 per cent of people in England are now broadband enabled: an increase of three per cent over the last 12 months.
Charlotte Brophy, spokeswoman for TV Licensing, said: “More and more people are getting used to buying products and services online and the TV Licence is no exception.
“We’ve seen a big increase in people buying their licence online over the last year, and many people now think of our website as their first port of call for anything related to their TV licence.
“It’s now possible to pay, update your details and answer most questions you might have with just a few clicks of a mouse – but of course, you can always ring us if you prefer.”
A colour TV licence costs £145. As well as paying online, it is possible to pay by Direct Debit, by credit or debit card over the phone, by post or in weekly or fortnightly instalments over the counter at one of almost 22,000 PayPoint outlets around the UK.
