Cake tribute to TV heroes Wallace and Gromit
Wigan's most famous Plasticine residents have been paid the ultimate tribute from one of the town's most famous bakers.
Wallace and Gromit, the stars of Oscar winner Nick Park's stop motion animation classics, were confirmed as Wiganers after a Wigan A-Z appeared in their big-screen debut, Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
In their latest adventure – A Matter of Loaf and Death, which will be screened on Christmas Day - they set up a bakery called "Top Bun."
It is a murder mystery tale in which the hapless Wallace and his intelligent pooch are stalked by a serial killer preying on local bread-makers.
Despite their new business placing them in direct competition with Wigan institution Edwards' in Platt Bridge, there are no hard feelings and bakery boss Bill Edwards is even marking the new TV appearance with a limited edition line of Wallace-themed cakes.
Son Duncan Edwards said: "We've baked some special Wallace and Gromit cakes to mark the screening of the new short film.
"The plaques that go on them are exclusively available only to members of the Master Bakers' National Association so we were pleased to get hold of some.
"There are some posters up in the shop too and it's going down well with customers."
After the Wigan A-Z appeared in Were-Rabbit, an eagle-eyed fan spotted a letter in the short film "The Wrong Trousers" which revealed Wallace did indeed live at the fictional "West Wallaby Street, Wigan", a fact
Park later confirmed.
Loaf and Death is the first animated short featuring the dynamic Wigan duo since 1995's "A Close Shave" and their first appearance since 2005's Were Rabbit.
The short film will have its UK premier on BBC1 on Christmas Day.
